Burning Tips and Candle Care
Beeswax candles burn cleaner, hotter and longer than soy, paraffin or mixed waxes candles. They burn with a bright, clear and steady flame.
Please read the following tips carefully so your beeswax candles burn safely and efficiently.
Candle Size
To prevent "tunneling," it is best to burn beeswax candles for one hour per inch of candle diameter.
3" Diameter = 3 hr min burn time
Candle Care During Burning
The first time you burn your candle is called the memory burn. Allow the wax pool to reach the edge of the candle before you blow it out (it can take several hours). This will prevent tunneling.
Always keep the wick trimmed to 1/4" to prevent a long flame, flickering and smoking.
Burn candles only in a draft-free environment away from open windows, air ducts, fans etc. This will help to prevent dripping and smoking.
When using candles, it's crucial to place them on a leveled, heat-resistant surface or in an appropriate holder, never directly on flammable surfaces (wood, resin).
Pillar candles are designed to stand on their own. Although they may drip a bit, for the most part, they should not.
”Hug” your Candle
Candle hugging has been a long tradition and it is a technique suitable for beeswax pillar candles. Its aim is to encourage the flame to consume all the wax available.
How to hug your candle: when you see a mantle, which is the soft/thin edge of wax, gently “hug” the soft wax toward the wick leaving at least 1/4" of the wick exposed.
Do not cover the wick. If walls are still thick and firm to the touch, the candle needs more burn time before hugging.
This procedure can be done while candle is burning, or after extinguishing, and wax is still soft and pliable.
Caution: wax will be hot so please do this slowly and with care!
Caring for Unburned Candles
Unused beeswax candles will develop a light matte film over time. This natural phenomenon, called bloom, occurs when the wax is exposed to lower temperatures and it is more apparent on darker candles.Removing the beeswax bloom is purely cosmetic, and it does not affect the candle’s performance or fragrance. Some people prefer the look of beeswax bloom as it adds to the natural beauty of the candle.
If you would like to remove the bloom, simply buff it with a cloth or use a hair dryer to gently heat the wax. You may also quickly dip your candle in warm water, making sure the wick will not get wet. If you are using heat, be very careful not to melt your candle!
Extinguishing the Candle
Extinguishing a beeswax candle can be done without producing smoke by dipping the wick into the hot wax pool using a metal tool, then bringing it back up and centering it for the next burn.
NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED!
